Sheldon Marquee 12th July 2008.

After a short drive over to Birmingham with some friends we arrived at what appeared to be just a local pub in the middle of a housing estate. The Chestnut Tree pub seemed a strange venue for a rock gig. But the pub served a cracking Curry for a fiver in the bar. As the punters arrived they all drifted into the lounge where the bands played.
We made our way through to the lounge also, where I was greeted by Mr Shades and told I was on the guest list (Thanks mate) before he disappeared back stage.
First up were a young thrash metal type band that I was not keen on although they seemed good at what they were playing. I went outside wanting to save my eardrums for the Handsome Beasts. I got chatting with the drummer Mick while out there.
The band hit the stage and it was the Mr Rocky Shades persona we were entertained with, instead of the DLW character I'd seen a few weeks earlier. From the moment he hit the stage we got the full on Mr Shades banter that we come to know and love (or hate) from the Wrathchild days. The band hit the stage minus the 2nd guitarist for the 1st tune, After Blood. And after the 2nd tune there were sound problems forcing the band to take a break while it was sorted. I joked with Rocky later as to if this was a new thing for bands to stop for a fag break.
Anyway on with the show and some brilliant guitar work and full on guitar poses (beat that Tone) from Alan the guitarist. The rest of the band was solid throughout too. We got 3 new songs from the band too One of which was Shaken and Not Stirred which was rather good. Roll on the new album they are recording. Rocky went through several changes of clothing and ended with what will become the trade mark at the end of the show of the Beasts mask being worn by Rocky. For some unknown reason I never took any pics of Rocky in the mask.
The audience seemed to enjoy the show, but I can only imagine that as there was no one down the front that they were all of the mid 40's age range and getting too old to rock. It was good to chat with Rocky after the show and get some pics of us in our wigs! Lol. Would of chatted longer but my friends meter was running in the car.

Incidently....I bought a cd while at the gig too... Handsome Beasts studio album called '04'. The reason I mention it is.... That the album was recorded, produced and mixed at Sable Rose Studio's in Coventry by Spike (Andy Faulkner). For those who don't know we (Guttercats) also recorded with Spike in the same studio for all three of our demo's. Wardi of Iron Horse fame also sings and wrote some of the tunes on the album too.

It's being reported by http://www.efestivals.co.uk that the Download Festival held at Donington Park could be on the move, due to the relocation of The British Grand Prix in 2010, here is the text:

eFestivals believes that the three day rock music event Download Festival held traditionally at Donington Park, Leicestershire will not take place there next year.

Donington Park Leisure Limited, operators of the motor racing and event venue, Donington Park, since Live Nation sold it to them in February last year, are due to host the 2010 British Grand Prix and will need to carry out major alterations and development to the site, including extending the track by a couple of miles in order to have it up to scratch to host the F1 event for the next ten years.

Donington Ventures Leisure Limited have been working closely with the local and national authorities considering the planning requirements that are necessary to make the race track a first class facility for the hosting of F1 in 2010. The details of this and the Donington Park master plan that outlines a 5 year investment programme of some £100m, have not been released yet.

eFestivals understands that in order to be able to complete the revitalisation and development on site work will be taking place from early next year, making the site unavailable to host the rock music festival.

There has been no confirmation from Download or Live Nation about the move, however possible sites could include hosting it at the Silverstone motor racing circuit in Northamptonshire or possibly at one of the sites which Live Nation already hosts a festival at such as Hyde Park, or Long Marston Airfield, in Warwickshire, the home of Global Gathering (which Live Nation own a stake in).

Download's press company have confirmed to eFestivals that there will definitely be a festival in 2009, and they believe it will still be held on the same site at Donington Park.

Don't really see it working in central London, where would everyone camp? and I thought Long Marston would have been too small, maybe Silverstone as they are probably licking their wounds and could do with an earner!

The last of the current UK tour dates.
Apologies for the short review. But I'm beat.

It was a last minute decision but I couldn't really miss the last night of the UK tour with Leppard after I'd seen some amazing performances already.
And boy was I glad I went.
Easily the best show on the tour, with amazing sound quality right from the beginning.
I'd not been to Nottingham arena before but it is a really great venue.Watched the show from stage left and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Coverdale's voice was really great tonight and the band were messing about onstage throughout.
Same set list as the previous dates but executed in particular fine form tonight.
If you were lucky enough to witness this show then you will agree it was simply wondrous. One of the best times I've ever seen them.
I couldn't possibly single out any one performance tonight from the guys as all sounded great.
The crowd were brilliant throughout and in fine voice.
Managed to see some of Leppard tonight from stage right and they played very well too.

All in all, an amazing tour. This band have got a LOT left in them yet.
If you've not picked up the new album 'Good to be bad' then please do yourself a favour and go get it.

Now I'm tired and off to bed!!
till next time.........

I've got a few photos (nothing special i'm afraid) but I'll post them when I get a chance.

Whitesnake- Echo arena Liverpool 15/7/08

Well, Whitesnake show number 3 for me from the latest 'Good to be bad' tour was at Liverpool.

The new Echo arena was the venue and although pooly sign posted and what with the sat nav taking us to a different end of the city we finally arrived at the venue and we were LATE.

Picked up tix from the box office and entered the venue rushed to the seats, sat down, took my jacket off...and the lights dimmed that second, and Whitesnake were onstage again!

I was looking forward to this show as Thunder were the support slot but as you've probably realised we had already missed them.

Oh well, the main reason we were there were onstage and lauching into 'Best Years' from the classic new album 'Good to be bad' once again kicked things off.

Sound was poor with Doug Aldrich's guitar drifting in and out.Smallish venue compared to the previous arenas so far I've visited with not enough room for the video screens to be on either side of the stage so we were stuck with just the one in the centre at the back.

The crowd was absolutely rubbish, and if this crowd was a testament to liverpool then god help them.
It wasn't until 'Is this love' was introduced that we got some decent response from the boring crowd.

Then we got what was become the highlight of the show on this tour, the amazing guitar battle between Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach. This then once again as it always seems to brought the house down and then the crowd were well up for the rest of the show.

The new 'A Fool in love' (quite possbily the best track on the album) was played, the acoustic version of 'Ain't gonna cry no more' proved once again a winner in the set and then the whole show was rounded off with the usual suspects of 'Give me all your love','Here I go again' and 'Still of the night'.

The bows were made, the crowd went wild and Whitesnake were once again victorious.

The guys were happy with the show and rightly so, they turned round a very quiet crowd into something quite spectacular.

This in part was due to Coverdale not giving up with the crowd and playing them very well. His humour and chats to the crowd in between songs, let alone his vocals proved why the man is were he is today and how Whitesnake has survived their 30 years in the business.
Great show overall and the same set in full as the other nights on the tour.

As usual i passed on Leppard(once on this tour was enough!) but as we left the arena we couldn't help notice just how good the sound was right from the off for them(again!!), but the crowd seemed just as poor as they'd been for Whitesnake at the beginning.

As I walked out i heard the same thing I've heard so many times on this tour..
Why weren't Whitesnake headlining?'
Why indeed.

New Zealand man sells his soul to 'Hell'

    * Story Highlights
    * New Zealand man sold his soul to food chain Hell Pizza for $3,800
    * Offer came after online auction site stopped bids because of complaints of bad taste
    * Auction attracted over 32,000 hits and over 100 bids before it was taken down
    * Pizza chain will collect "deed of ownership" to hang on wall of headquarters

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A New Zealand man has sold his soul to hell -- Hell Pizza, that is.

The New Zealand pizza chain said Thursday it had struck a deal with Walter Scott, 24, to buy a deed to his soul, shortly after an online auction site that initially agreed to the sale withdrew it from the Internet because of complaints it was in bad taste.

Scott offered his soul on the TradeMe site on Wednesday, saying he had not found it to be much use.

"I can't see it, touch it or feel it, but I can sell it, so I'm going to palm it off to the highest bidder," Scott, 24, said on the sale site.

The auction attracted more than 32,000 hits and over 100 bids before it was taken down.

TradeMe business manager Michael O'Donnell said the company had received an "overwhelming number of complaints from the TradeMe community."

"A lot of people felt it was offensive even though we thought it was there for good fun," he told The Associated Press. "So the compliance team pulled it."

He said the auction had also attracted many bogus bids -- while the last bid on the site was listed as $3,799, the last genuine bid was $456.

Rachael Allison, head of marketing for Hell Pizza, which has outlets across New Zealand and trades on a naughty image, said the company contacted Scott shortly after the auction was removed and offered him $3,800.

"The soul belongs to Hell, there is simply no better place for it," Allison told The Associated Press. "He was pretty delighted."

O'Donnell had said on Wednesday that Scott's auction complied with TradeMe's rules because a physical object -- the deed of ownership -- would change hands.

In 2001, 20-year-old U.S. university student Adam Burtle tried to sell his soul on eBay, but the auction was pulled after the company ruling that something tangible needed to be exchanged for a viable sale.

Allison said she would fly to Scott's home town of Wanganui on North Island Friday "to pick up the soul -- or at least the deed of ownership."

The deed would be hung on a wall at the company's headquarters in the northern city of Auckland and an image of it posted on the company's Web site.

"We'd love to get his soul in the virtual world -- to keep it immortal," she said.
