GMT – West Park Hotel – Harrogate – 07/05/2010

Well to be honest I thought I was in the wrong place. The West park hotel is indeed a hotel and quite a nice one. I certainly didn’t think it was the kind of place to host a rock night to include a performance by GMT.

However I was pleasantly mistaken and following a competent rocking set by the Virgin Mary’s who were much improved since they supported GMT at Grimsby – yardbirds last year, the crowd waited in anticipation for the main event.
Robin Guy’s drumkit was uncovered and then the familiar clock chime intro tape came through the PA.

The band walked on, no priest robes on John and no top hat for Bernie this time. Then to my surprise the first track saw the reintroduction of Wild West. Dropped previously as a non-GMT track it suits the band perfectly and is a great gig starter as it always was.

Bernie looked great in the guitar hero’s favourite outfit a soldier jacket and shades. Choosing his white Strat in preference to the blue “Ozzy” one although that was the spare on the stand.

Robin was a dynamo behind the drums as always, twirling and spinning sticks with not a beat dropped. John holding it all together, smiling and just thoroughly enjoying himself, as they all seemed to be.

Not the best venue for viewing and a fair amount of space between the band and the audience due to the layout but there was a camera and a TV screen to aid vision. I managed to find a space at the side of the “stage” so I was actually behind the PA but the sound was fine.

I can’t remember the exact order or even all the numbers but we certainly got, Bitter & Twisted, Cannonball, Can’t beat rock and roll, Rocky road, Punko Rocco, Perfumed garden, new single – Do you remember how to rock, plus one of the other slow numbers whose name escapes me at the moment.
Bernie played some amazing and inspired guitar all night. Notes seemed to be plucked out of thin air and his tapping, harmonics and whammy bar technique were not only aural ecstasy but also a stunning vision to watch.
After Robin’s drum solo we got the sing along New Orleans, a nod to Ozzy and Randy with Mr Crowley and if memory serves correctly the set closer was Smoke on the Water with John’s famous smoking mammoth bass.

The encores included Hendrix’s Fire and a surprise outing for old favourite No Easy Way.

A very entertaining and high-energy show and the enjoyment was evident on all the guys’ faces as well as that of the highly appreciative audience. A great night.
yes i bet its the first time the band has played in a dining room, not the best venue in the world but the band were........BRILLIANT all the songs folk wanted 2 hear class playing by all ,bernies guitar work was some of the best i'v seen in my life met few new friends off this forum, met the band all very nice folk, and the followin' morning we sat and had our breakfast in the exact spot bernie was performing the night before.. support band were very good and jamie don a class job, HAPPY DAYS !!!!!

As others have said - surreal venue. The mixing desk dwarfed the place and PA might have been turned up to "1"(any more and we'd have probably been pushed out of the door!). No real stage - just the raised bit where the bride and groom + close family would sit at the wake (err..sorry...wedding reception), repleat with plaster-cast cherubs. Nice comfy carpet to sit on to watch the band though. (LOL) Despite, or maybe because of, the weird layout the band played a blinder. Bernie just makes it look so easy, from the heartfelt blues of Perfumed Garden (a personal fave) to the shredding of Mr Crowley and John is just..well...John. Stoic, unflappable, solid - the bassists bassist. How Robin Guy keeps such impeccable time with all the twirls and tosses is beyond me. If someone can tell me how to post pictures on the forum I'll have a look to see if any are worth sharing.

Special mention must go to the Virgin Mary's. Retro-rock with a 70s groove and a drummer that might just be Keith Moon reincarnate (extra kudos forn the gong). If effort counts for anything these guys have a hell of a career in front of them.

Pictures are posted, easiest by using a photobucket or flickr account. Then using the link that is supplied by either site.

The Virgin Mary's are an excellent band and I have it on good authority that they have earnt themselves a slot at this years Download. Good luck to them!

Cheers Redial - I'll load some up to flickr in the next couple of days and then either link them across to here or post my flickr account details so anyone that is interested can have a look-see.

Can confirm, from conversation after their set, that the Virgin Marys are indeed playing one of the numerous stages at Download. Macclesfields' best, 2nd best or 3rd best band - depending on your views on Silverwing (Flashbomb Fever) and the Macc Lads (Beer & Sex & Chips & Gravy)!!!!!!!

At last I've got round to getting pictures off my camera and into the 'puter. Loaded 20odd onto flickr. Go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/9888698@N06/4616282008/ as one exampleThese will be cut down to my opinion of (or maybe yours, judged on posted comments or No. of views) the best half dozen or so in about a months time.
