Great little venue, it was the first time I have been to Club Riga and the fact that GMT were late was actually a bonus for me, no support and straight into the headline.
Due on at 9.30 and only scheduled to play for an hour was a little disappointing to learn, but 5 minutes early the familiar beeps came through the PA and the band took to the stage and straight into “Wild West”.
Then into a couple of new tracks ‘Bullet in The Brain’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’, my current new fave.
Bernie sporting a new head mikeset gave him a bit more freedom to move around on stage and seemed to work very well, just remember Bernie we can hear everything you say now!
Giving the white Strat another outing and resting the blue one, what we got was a good new look.
Pumping out ‘Cannonball' and then another new one, a ballsy blues Rock song 'Perfumed Garden' which must of clocked in at 10 minutes. Robin joked that it was 20 minutes long and that all the other tracks were B sides (sorry mate no such thing as a B side these days).
'Punko Rocco' next up having had the download for a couple of days I thought this fitted in well into the set and was followed by 'Longer Than Tomorrow' and then 'You Can't Hold Me' a debut for the new track and as John put it we were Guinea Pigs for the night!
John and Bernie then had a little sit down whilst Robin got to work in his new office the all new white Pearl kit giving us a solo, leading into 'Rocky Road'.
By now I was starting to look at the clock fearing the worst, it was nearing 10.30 and I have seen some bands rather rudely turned down as the curfew neared, but not tonight.
‘Summerland’ up next and as good as I have ever heard it and full length no half measures tonight.
A couple of audience participating numbers next 'Can't Beat Rock 'n' Roll' and ‘New Orleans’, by now the curfew had been and gone and I was clock watching, expecting it all to end.
But no and to my total surprise Bernie launched into 'No Easy Way' and then to greater surprise came Robins announcement "For the second time in 2 Years" and they blasted out 'Vincenzo'.
Then they were heading for the dressing room with the meagre crowd of <40 baying for more!
They didn't even get to the edge of the stage before Robin and Bernie pulled John back on to the stage John commenting "they said an hour!" They had been playing for almost 90 minutes at that point. What could be next? Out came The Mammoth in its full glory, lit and smoking and out came the GMT version of 'Fire'.
Loads of cheering and hand shaking as they eventually left the stage after more than the allotted 60 minutes. Well done Club Riga on that.
After about 10-15 minutes the band sauntered out to meet and greet those that had waited.
All in all I have to say, I think that was the best show I have seen them play, even with Bernie's self confessed croaky voice. I drove home a happy man.
Bring on the next three, Nuneaton, Grimsby and RBCS 25.
